The Philadelphia Freedoms (5-5) host the first place San Diego Aviators (6-4) tonight at Hagan Arena. Both teams are coming off of impressive victories last night; the Freedoms beat the Orange County Breakers in a super tiebreaker and the Aviators beat the New York Empire. With a win in tonight’s match, the Freedoms could move into first place in the league.
In Men’s Singles, Darian King of the Freedoms will face Rajeev Ram of the Aviators. King lost a hard fought match last night to Gabashvili and Ram is coming off of a win over Mardy Fish. This will be the first head-to-head meeting between Ram and King.
Last night, Coach Kardon made the decision to start Taylor Townsend in Women’s Singles. The decision proved to be a smart one, as Townsend got a big victory over Wickmayer. Tonight, she will go up against former Freedoms star, Naomi Broady, who upset Genie Bouchard last night in Singles.
The Freedoms are happy to welcome Naomi Broady back to Philadelphia. She will team up with Darija Jurak in Women’s Doubles, the pairing will face Taylor Townsend and Sloane Stephens. The Aviators pair won their match last night in New York while the Freedoms fell 5-4, despite coming back from a 4-0 deficit.
Men’s Doubles will be played by Fabrice Martin and Darian King who will take on Raven Klaasen and Rajeev Ram. Klaasen is currently the top Men’s Doubles player in the league, but King and Martin are not far behind. This has the potential to be an extremely exciting match.
Fabrice Martin and Taylor Townsend were the heroes of last night’s win over the Breakers. After losing the Mixed Doubles set, they came to back to get the Super Tiebreak win to clinch the victory for the Freedoms. Tonight, they will battle Raven Klaasen and Darija Jurak. Going into tonight’s match, Martin and Townsend continue to be the top Mixed Doubles pairing in the league and the anchor for Coach Kardon. It is expected that Kardon will have Mixed Doubles be the final set yet again in tonight’s match.
If the Freedoms are able to keep the match close or even enter the final set with a win, the Aviators will have the work cut out for them going against Martin and Townsend. Last night, Martin and Townsend had the arena on their side, if they are able to do the same tonight, the Aviators will be in for trouble.
