Match Recap: July 28 Freedoms vs. OC Breakers

In a season with many ups-and-downs, there has been one constant for the Philadelphia Freedoms, the play of Fabrice Martin and Taylor Townsend in Mixed Doubles. The pairing helped the Freedoms end their three match losing streak and pick up their fifth win of the season in last night’s match against the Orange County Breakers. The Breakers entered the match tied for first place in the league. The Freedoms are now 5-5 on the season.

Match Recap:

Men’s Doubles: Fabrice Martin and Darian King defeated Ken Skupski and Teymuraz Gabashvili 5-4.

Women’s Doubles: Yanina Wickmayer and Andreja Klepac defeated Sloane Stephens and Taylor Townsend 5-4. Stephens and Townsend were down 4-0 in the set before making a comeback to pick up a few crucial games for the Freedoms.

Men’s Singles: Teymuraz Gabashvili defeated Darian King 5-4

Women’s Singles: Taylor Townsend defeated Yanina Wickmayer 5-2.

Women’s Doubles: Yanina Wickmayer and Andreja Klepac defeated Sloane Stephens and Taylor Townsend 5-4. Stephens and Townsend were down 4-0 in the set before making a comeback to pick up a few crucial games for the Freedoms.

Mixed Doubles:  Ken Skupksi and Andreja Klepac defeated Fabrice Martin and Taylor Townsend 5-2, sending the match to a Super Tiebreaker.

Super Tiebreak: Fabrice Martin and Taylor Townsend 7 – Skupksi and Klepac 4.

With the win over the Breakers, the Freedoms are now right in the middle of the pack in the standings. The league has been extremely competitive this season, meaning that the Freedoms King Cup hopes are still very much alive. The Freedoms have a huge match on Saturday night against the now first place and defending champion San Diego Aviators. With a victory, the Freedoms could potentially move into first place.
