The Philadelphia Freedoms (4-3) host the New York Empire (3-4) tonight at Hagan Arena, the match is set to begin at 7:30. The Freedoms are coming off of a loss at the hands of the Washington Kastles, who defeated the Freedoms last night 20-15, behind stellar play from Wimbledon Finalist, Venus Williams, and Wimbledon semi-finalist, Sam Querrey. Tonight’s match will be the fourth time this season the Freedoms take on the Empire. After losing the two matches against the Empire, the Freedoms won the third, 25-13. Tonight, they look to even up the season series at two games each.
Andy Roddick joins the Freedoms for the match against the Empire. Roddick was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame just three days ago and now looks to help the Freedoms pick up their fifth win. Roddick will face fellow American and lifelong friends, Mardy Fish in Men’s Singles. Fish and Roddick are two of the best American born tennis players and have a history of playing against each other. Roddick has a career record of 9-3 against Fish.
Sloane Stephens and Taylor Townsend lost their first set in Women’s Doubles last night to Venus Williams and Anastasia Rodionova. Tonight they look to move to 4-0 on the season against Maria Sanchez and Kirsten Flipkens, who have had trouble figuring out the Freedoms pair thus far.
While Flipkens has struggled in Women’s Doubles, she was dominant in the first two matches of the season, beating Sloane Stephens twice in Women’s Doubles. In the third match, Coach Kardon decided to play Taylor Townsend who had success over Flipkens and eventually won the singles match 5-1 over Maria Sanchez, who subbed in for Flipkens when Sloane Stephens went up 2-0. The Women’s Singles match tonight is sure to be a good one, no matter what the match-up may be. Projected match-up has Sloane Stephens against Kirstin Flipkens.
A wild-card match for the Freedoms will be Men’s Doubles. Coach Kardon will decide between playing Andy Roddick alongside Fabrice Martin, or keeping the duo of Martin and Darian King, which has been successful as of late. Last night, Martin and King beat two of the best players in the world in Sam Querrey and Bruno Soares. Whether it be Roddick/Martin or King/Martin, the pairing will go up against Mardy Fish and Neil Skupski.
