Match Notes: July 24

The Philadelphia Freedoms (4-2) host the Washington Kastles (3-2) for the second straight net. Last night, the Freedoms got their fourth straight victory as they beat the Kastles 20-18. For a full recap of last night’s match, click here.

The Freedoms look to move to 5-2 on the season with a victory in tonight’s match which has the ability to help the Freedoms gain sole possession of first place in the league, barring the result of the San Diego Aviators match against the Orange County Breakers later tonight.

Tonight’s match will be slightly different from last night’s match, as the Kastles are employing a star-studded lineup with the hopes of picking up their first win of the season against the Freedoms.  Most notably, Venus Williams and Sam Querrey join the Kastles for the first time this season and they will team up with Bruno Soares, Madison Brengle and Anastasia Rodionova.

The Championships Wimbledon 2017Venus Williams will likely face off against Sloane Stephens. Stephens has had success in her career against Williams, as she is 2-0 against her in two career meetings. Venus comes to Philadelphia after reaching the Wimbledon final less than two weeks ago. Venus has won 34 WTA singles titles including five Grand Slam singles championships – Wimbledon ’00-’01, ‘05, US Open ’00-’01 and 9 doubles championships.

Venus isn’t the only Kastle who recently found success at Wimbledon. Sam Querrey joins the Kastles for tonight’s match after reaching the semi-final at Wimbledon before being defeated by Marin Čilić. Querrey is currently ranked No. 23 in the world in Men’s Singles. He will face off against Darian King of the Freedoms, who beat Sam Groth last night, 5-2 in singles.  This will be the first career meeting between Querrey and King.

Bruno Soares, currently ranked 6th in the world in Men’s Doubles will team up with Querrey in Men’s Doubles. In last night’s match, Soares and Sam Groth defeated Fabrice Martin and Darian King. The only repeat set of last night’s match projects to be in Mixed Doubles; Soares and Rodionova will look to get revenge on Fabrice Martin and Taylor Townsend, who won the match 5-4 last night.
